Just a couple weeks ago, The Mindsight received an early Christmas present. For us it was the best one of all, in fact, I’m almost certain it even made the fat guy in red and white a little jealous!
On December 22nd, Ryan and I (Lenny) made the trip across Toronto to Indie Pool to pick up the first 1000 copies of our brand new EP, Incarnate, and although there was no reindeer escort, this event was nothing shy of momentus.
We had spoken to our Artist Rep., Trevor Norris, earlier that day and he assured us that the end result of the pressing was a thing of beauty. He was right. From the moment we walked into his office and laid eyes on the prize, it was love at first sight, and at risk of sounding slightly arrogant here, I take no shame in saying – it looked BAD ASS!
Finally, after more than two and a half years, countless hours in the studio and one hell of a ride on the emotional roller coaster that is a band, all our hard work had come to fruition in the tangible form of a CD.
Blood, sweat and years poured over cardboard and plastic – TITS YEAH!!!
After completing our business at Indie Pool, we began our journey back home to meet up with Dustin, only delayed by a brief stop at the Beer Store, for this was an occasion that definitely called for some celebratory pops. The trip was not a long one, but excitement filled the air and temptation was knocking. Although it was difficult, Ryan and I managed to restrain from playing our new treasure.
Upon arrival and reunion with our fellow bandmate, we were greeted with a hearty welcome and a distinct sense of relief; the anticipation was finally over – Incarnate had arrived.
We loaded in the boxes of our newly pressed album with much enthusiasm, like pirates carrying aboard chests of gold. Each of us took our seats on the couch-like throne in the living room and sat in awe. The ensuing moments could only be defined by sheer jubilation.
The sound of ripping cardboard and shredding plastic filled the room, accented harmoniously by the cracking of beers and the ring of clanking bottles commemorating our special moment in time.
Next came the first listen to the official versions of our songs. And although we had listened to them thousands of times throughout the making of the record, no time was as satisfying as this one. We were F*#$in stoked!!!
The shitty home stereo speakers could barely contain the glory that was being unleashed upon the world, nor could they do our mixes any real justice, but it didn’t matter – nothing could take away from the energy in the room.
The night of Incarnate had arrived and with it the closure of a chapter in The Mindsight history. But just as that door was closing, another was beginning to open. Plans for promotion and our live show stirred projections toward a brighter future of limitless possibilities.
Just as our album had finished playing, it seemed simultaneously, we had begun talking of the next record and all the things we wanted to do differently to improve upon an effort we were already so proud of. As it goes when striving for perfection, the desire is unrelenting and pursuit could be perpetual were it not for common sense forcing the occasional check in.
I guess it just seems to be the way of The Mindsight; to bite off more than we can chew so eagerly while barely taking the time to sip the champagne and savour the meal that came before. In any case, our conversations only generated more excitement and kept the celebration rolling.
The only thing that could have made that moment any better was the presence of Shaynard (who was indisposed for personal reasons) and Stevie, in spite of the fact that he was no longer a part of The Mindsight. In their stead, my brother, Shane, came out and we all shared in a toast to a job well done and the brothers who couldn’t be there with us. Mmmmmm Jager!
As one might assume, the rest of the night was ripe with over-indulgence and debauchery and rightfully so. We had earned it. After countless hours of hard work, a little inebriation seemed an appropriate cap off for an indie metal band caught in it’s moment among the stars.
